Belgium 2-1 USA: The paper review
Today’s Belgian front pages have marked the team’s thrilling victory over the United States that sees the team set up a quarter final against Argentina this Saturday.
Belgium’s best selling newspaper asks Lionel Messi “Do you know De Bruyne and Lukaku yet?”
La DH go with a picture of goalscorer Kevin De Bruyne, whom they call the Saviour of Salvador inside the paper and the headline ‘Superheroes’.
Het Nieuwsblad called the 2-1 win a “mad thriller” on their front page.
L’Avenir’s front page shows the old generation and the new, reminding us that this current side have matched the exploits of the 1986 team, which would go on to reach the semis.
Quality title De Morgen sums it up in one word “Wonderful!”
Le Soir goes with a delighted but relieved Romelu Lukaku and the headline “The joy of the Belgians”.
De Standaard must have been taking some of Marc Wilmots’ medicine with their headling “Bring on Messi”
La Libre lead with “Devilish!” and say that the Belgians beat the tenacious Americans at the end of what they describe as “breathless drama”. I was certainly shattered afterwards and that was from watching!
GVA go with “Nailbiting, De Bruyne and Lukaku liberate Belgians.”
And finally, the ever-vibrant Sudpresse papers. Their front page says “Magical! Thanks to our superheroes De Bruyne and Lukaku, Belgium are in the quarter-finals. Inside, the paper shows how the whole country went through a rollercoaster of emotions last night.
