Scotland 0-2 Belgium: Reactions to the victory

A selection of the post-game reactions. The featured image is courtesy of @BelgianFootball.

Marc Wilmots

“We can now enjoy this victory. We went about it in an adult manner. The Scots had one chance and almost nothing besides. We had four chances before the break and made it 1-0. Subsequently, we didn’t go all-out on the attack but we allowed the Scots to do a lot of huffing and puffing and we waited for the right moment to score a second. We have 22 points from 24 but a lot can still happen. We must remain grounded.” (VRT)

Steven Defour

I saw Kevin gathering pace. I wasn’t sure if I could really get there in front of goal but he picked me out. I took a shot and placed it well. When the ball hit the net, there was a lot of emotion. The whole of Belgium went mad. It’s for such moments you play football. I knew this morning I would be playing. The coach told me that I had trained well during the week and had been performing well for Porto. He said that he had faith in me. We have a great team where anyone can play, anyone can start and we are becoming a strong team globally. I have had to work very hard for the last two years at Porto. I hope to continue in this vein.  [RTBF]

We played very well and in particular, got a great result. At 0-1 there was always the chance we would concede a goal. (Scotland) were solid, they were well organised and defended quite deep. They had two or maybe three efforts on goal but those aside, we had a great game. I heard that Serbia and Croatia drew 1-1, which made it a perfect day for us. [RTBF]

Daniel van Buyten

(The support was) exceptional. All the fans who follow us when we play away from home play their part. We knew there would be a fantastic atmosphere here and on top of that we had the Belgian fans who were behind us all the way. We have taken a big step this evening. We will fight to the end to ensure there are no nasty surprises. We will enjoy ourselves this evening and then prepare for what lies ahead. As I said before the game, the important thing is we have a quality group of players who are getting stronger and are cut out for this level. [RTBF]

And one tweet I particularly liked:

Dear Leekens, this is what 90% qualified looks like. 😉
