The Alexander Büttnerfly-effect

Sir Alex Ferguson has an eye for Dutch players. Jaap Stam was a great buy  and so was Ruud van Nistelrooij. Edwin van der Sar was the keeper that made the Manchester-faithful forget about Peter Smeichel. And as a stand-in, Raimond van der Gouw had always been very solid. From that perspective, it was hardly surprising to see Ferguson go Dutch once again in the summer of 2012.

Few will argue that the best buy for Manchester United this summer is of Dutch origin. Few will argue the best buy has been a left-footed player. Ofcourse, we’re discussing Alexander Büttner here ladies and gentlemen. Would Manchester United be cruising to their twentieth league title if Alexander Büttner wouldn’t have joined the Red Devils? We think not. Sometimes, something that looks innocent at first turns out to be the catalyst to a bigger, more important event. And to honour the left-back who has been the main reason behind Patrice Evra’s sudden burst into form this season, we have compiled some interesting facts and stats on the former Vitesse-man.
